DAY IN THE LIFE: An Orangeville Prep Athlete
Jamal Murray. Lu Dort. Thon Maker. They all started right here.
Their names are in NBA arenas. Their jerseys hang in locker rooms from Denver to Oklahoma City. They are household names in the basketball world. But before the draft picks, the contracts and the highlights, they were Orangeville Prep Bears. And they lived exactly the life you are about to read.
This is a story about the daily commitment that separates those who dream about the next level from those who actually reach it. It is about early mornings, full schedules, and the discipline to do the work when no one is watching.
THEY WALKED THE ORANGEVILLE PATH
The proof is in the players. Orangeville Prep has produced some of the most decorated young basketball talent to come out of Canada and beyond. These are not just names, they are evidence of what is possible when elite development meets relentless daily commitment.
◆ Jamal Murray — NBA Champion — Denver Nuggets | 2016 NBA Draft, 7th Overall Pick
◆ Lu Dort — NBA All-Defensive calibre guard — Oklahoma City Thunder | 2019 NBA Draft
◆ Thon Maker — 2016 NBA Draft, 10th Overall Pick | First international player to enter the draft straight from high school in a generation
◆ And many more who have earning NCAA Division I full scholarships and carving careers in professional leagues around the world.
What did they have in common? They showed up every day. They embraced the schedule. They were on time, locked in, and committed to the process even when it was hard.
A Division 1 full-ride does not come to those who sometimes work hard. It comes to those who cannot stop.
PRACTICE DAYS
MONDAY through FRIDAY - 6:00AM - 11:00PM - REPEAT
There are no shortcuts on a practice day. This is the schedule that built the alumni on that list above and it is the same schedule that will build whoever is next. It is tight, it is demanding, and it requires every Bear to be exactly where they need to be, exactly when they need to be there.
6:00 AM: Morning Workouts —The world is still asleep. You are not. This is the hour that separates you from everyone else who wants what you want.
7:30 AM: Breakfast & Get Ready — Fuel the body with intention.
8:30 AM: Catch the Bus to School — On time. Every time. Collective discipline starts at 8:30 in the morning.
From the moment you step on that bus to the moment classes end, you are a student first. Academics are a core part of what we build here at Orangeville Prep. The Bears who earn NCAA Division I full scholarships do it with their grades and their character, not just their game.
Teachers and coaches hold every athlete to the same standard in the classroom as they do on the court. Manage your time & stay focused.
3:30 PM: School is Out — The mindset shifts. It is time to work.
4:00 – 5:30 PM: Basketball Practice — Intense, competitive, and detailed. Shooting, defense, ball-handling, conditioning, team systems, live game situations. Every drill exists for a reason. Coaches push you to communicate, compete, and master the details that separate good players from great ones.
5:30 – 6:30 PM: Weight Room — Strength, speed, balance, and injury prevention. The goal is not just to get stronger, it is to become the most complete athlete you can be. The weight room is where durability is built.
6:30 – 7:30 PM: Dinner — Recovery. A proper meal after training is not optional. It is part of the program.
7:30 – 9:00 PM: Study Hall — The discipline to sit down and study after a hard practice is exactly the kind of character that earns full scholarships and builds careers.
9:00 PM: Personal Time — Stretch. Hydrate. Wind down. Prepare your body to do it all again tomorrow.
11:00 PM: Lights Out — Rest.
Then wake up. And do it again.
That is the lifestyle. Day after day, week after week, season after season. The Bears who run this schedule without excuses are the ones who grow the fastest, compete the hardest, and leave Orangeville Prep with options that others can only dream about.
HOME GAME DAY
ATHLETE INSTITUTE FIELDHOUSE
Home game days carry a different energy. The Athlete Institute Fieldhouse has seen careers launched from its hardwood. When the Bears take that floor, they carry the weight of every practice rep, every early morning, and every late-night study session.
MORNING & MIDDAY
MorningShootaround — Get the body activated. This is preparation.
MiddayFilm Review — Study the opponent. Know their tendencies, their sets, their habits.
PRE-GAME
Pre-Game Meal -Your body is an engine, fuel it for four quarters of elite competition.
Warmup & Locker Room - Dynamic movement, shooting routines, full mental activation. The coaches deliver the game plan. The team locks in.
GAME TIME
TIP OFF — WIN Compete with everything you have. Play for your teammates, your program, and the standard that Champions Live Here demands. The athletes who came before you won on this floor. Now it is your turn.
POST-GAME
Post-Game Meal — Replenish. The body needs care after competition.
Team Debrief — What worked. What did not. Get better every game.
Lights Out — Rest. Tomorrow the grind continues.
AWAY GAME DAY
ACROSS ONTARIO & THE UNITED STATES
Away days reveal character. Whether the Bears are playing an OSBA road game across Ontario or traveling to a tournament in the United States, away days demand more: more focus, more adaptability, more professionalism, and a deeper commitment to being a team.
College scouts are at these games. NCAA programs are watching. Every single away game is an audition.
DEPARTURE
Early Morning — Bags packed & Load up. The team that travels together, competes together.
Film on the Road — Coaches share clips. Players study the opponent.
ARRIVAL
Shootaround — New gym. Different floor, different energy, different sightlines. Bears adapt.
Pre-Game Meal —The game plan is locked. The mindset is right. Time to go to work.
GAME TIME
TIP OFF — WIN Away gyms can be loud and hostile. The ability to perform under pressure, in environments that are not comfortable, is precisely what earns Division I offers.
THE RETURN
Post-Game —Debrief & Recovery Wins are celebrated. Losses are analysed. Both are used as fuel.
Travel Home — Late nights on the road are part of the sacrifice.
Lights Out — Rest. Tomorrow the grind continues.
THIS IS WHAT IT TAKES
Not everyone can do this. The schedule, the discipline, the sacrifice, the relentless focus on becoming better every single day, it demands a level of commitment that most people are not willing to make.
But for those who can show up at 6am without being asked, who will study after two-hour practices, who will be on time every day and give everything they have in every session, the return on that investment is life-changing.
A Division I full scholarship. A professional career. Opportunities that open doors your peers cannot imagine. That is what Orangeville Prep has delivered. That is what this program is built to deliver again and again.
Success is not given here. It is earned.
The Athlete Institute Fieldhouse is not just a gym. It is a proving ground. The courts across Ontario and the tournament floors in the United States are not just venues, they are opportunities. Every day of this schedule is a brick in the foundation of something bigger than basketball.
Stay focused on your goals. Do the work when it is hard. Outwork the doubt. Trust the process.
The next level is real. It is earned here. And it starts tomorrow morning at 6 AM.
Champions Live Here.
Success Is An Address.
