Devon is one of our most consistent members to our 9:30am class. Members who have gotten to know her will tell you how generous and kind she is, and has become such an incredible part of our CrossFit community.
I asked Devon to describe her experiences at CrossFit Orangeville. Here is what she had to say:
Explain what made you decide to start CrossFit
I had two babies basically back to back and really wanted to focus on health and fitness. I never lifted weights before. I heard about CrossFit Orangeville and driven by Athlete Institute many times. I was so intrigued seeing people of all ages doing gymnastics moves and lifting heavy weights. It looked so challenging. I decided to give it a try. I was so nervous! Like many others I thought you had to be fit to do CrossFit. I was pleasantly surprised how welcoming the environment was. I remember overhead press was the strength focus in my first class. I could barley lift the bar. I committed then to CrossFit Orangeville and getting stronger. Three months later, I could lift almost twice the weight of the bar overhead!
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I have been doing CrossFit for just over a year. I had a semi serious shoulder injury this past December. I wasn't able to do any overhead movements for 6 months. The coaches at CrossFit Orangeville encouraged me to continue to come to CrossFit class and always modified the workouts so I could participate. The coaches helped me get stronger while overcoming an injury. I was so thankful to have the support to continue CrossFit while I recovered. I am back in full force now, stronger then I have ever been, and loving every minute of it!
Explain how CrossFit Orangeville has changed your life
CrossFit Orangeville has had an amazing impact on my life. I have more energy then ever before. In a busy world with two young boys, I have come to rely on my hour at CrossFit as time I can invest in myself, setting personal goals and challenging myself. My workouts are the cornerstone of my day. I have never been so motivated to improve my strength and fitness. I get up every day (for the most part) excited to find out the workout of the day. I have met so many great friends who challenge me. I enjoy seeing everyone around me succeed and meet their goals. It is truly a unique environment at CrossFit Orangeville. One I am very proud to be a part of.
What are your short-term and long-term goals
I just started doing kipping pull ups! Nothing has been so rewarding in my CrossFit journey than this accomplishment. My goal now is to perform 10 unbroken (without letting go of the bar). I also want to improve my form and strength on the Olympic lifts.
Long-term, I want to stay as focused as possible on improving my strength and endurance. Oh yes, and I will do a muscle-up one day. You can count on it!
Any advice for individuals who may be nervous or apprehensive about starting CrossFit?
I was nervous starting CrossFit as a beginner. It took me one class and I was hooked. Everyone was so welcoming and helpful. The coaches took time to make sure I was doing the movements properly. I quickly learned that everything is scalable to your fitness level. I encourage anyone who wants to invest in improving themselves to try CrossFit Orangeville. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish. I love that no matter what fitness level you are at, with CrossFit, you will always have goals. Whether it's to do your first double under or do 50 unbroken. You are up against yourself. The challenges are endless. And so rewarding!
