I asked Linda to answer a few questions regarding her time here at CrossFit Orangeville. Despite never having done CrossFit before, Linda is now one of our most dedicated members. Not only that, but she continues to amaze and impress many of us with her "fighter's spirit," as I like to call it, never wanting to give up on anything - whether it be a max set of push-ups with stopping, or holding a back extension for 5 minutes in length! Thanks for being such an integral part of our community Linda - your efforts are inspiring!
1. Please explain your health history (if noteworthy)
I have been extremely healthy but did not win the “gene pool." I lost both my parents very young, between them, there is Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, High Cholesterol, etc. This has motivated me to do all I can to be fit and healthy - and for the most part, have been exercising regularly for the past 30 years or so.
I have done a lot of different things towards that goal, aerobics in the late 80’s (yes I admit I had leg warmers), distance running and some weight training in the mid 90’s, karate and various cross training until starting with CrossFit Orangeville.
2. Explain what made you decide to start CrossFit
I didn’t really decide to join CrossFit, we had moved and had lost my basement gym which I had used faithfully with my workout buddy for more than a decade. With space restrictions and a total lack of motivation I decided to join Athlete Institute, it is a 4 minute drive - so no excuses.
I thought I would try a CrossFit class having no idea what it was, I guess I thought it was some kind of bootcamp training. When I arrived for my first class so many of the members introduced themselves and genuinely seemed so happy to be there, I felt at home right away. It didn’t take long for me to get hooked, think I upgraded my membership to silver (3 classes/week) within 2 weeks and to unlimited a couple of months later.
3. How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I have been doing CrossFit for about a year.
4. Explain how CrossFit Orangeville has changed your life
Where to start?
This (CrossFit Orangeville) is an inclusive and encouraging family. The care and professionalism of the coaching ensures you don’t get ahead of yourself and get injured. I feel stronger and fitter than ever (seriously, ever!) My body composition has changed, my energy level is way up, and I look forward to (almost) every workout. There are so many aspects to CrossFit, always something to learn or improve upon, some of them scare me but that’s what makes it challenging.
5. What are your short-term and long-term goals
Short term - keep working on form, still a ways to go before some of the more advanced lifts feel somewhat natural, and definitely strict pull-ups by the end of the year!
Long term - crazy things like handstand pushups and muscle ups - why not?
6. Any advice for individuals who may be nervous or apprehensive about starting CrossFit?
There is nothing to be afraid of, you move at your own pace, no one judges. You will not find a more supportive group of people to help you on your journey.
