Member Spotlight: Angela Bottineau

September 13, 2017

Angela joined CrossFit Orangeville last fall with the Beginner Bootcamp. I would say she was one of those typical members who was quite hesitant about CrossFit, but decided to finally give it a shot. After she completed the Bootcamp (twice), she then joined our regular classes and has not looked back!

We asked Angela to answer a few questions for us to describe her experiences here at CrossFit Orangeville. Here is what she had to say.

Please explain your health history

I have always been relatively healthy, but as I got into my mid to later 40's I noticed that I was  gaining weight each year, feeling sluggish, and not dealing well with getting older!  Throughout the years,  I have tried many different exercise classes, spin class, TRX training, and going to the gym on my own. Nothing stuck, and I would quickly lose motivation. I am results driven, and need to see results fairly quickly.

Explain what made you decide to start CrossFit

I have been interested in CrossFit for awhile, but never really understood what CrossFit was, and how it would be different than what I have already tried in the past.  Then I came across a facebook ad for Orangeville CrossFit Bootcamp, and reached out to Coach Tyler, and he responded back immediately. The rest is History, I went into CrossFit, not sure if I could do it, but I love it.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

Less than a year, I started in September 2016 by taking the Bootcamp class twice a week. I loved Bootcamp so much, that I took 2 rounds of it. I think I could have been okay with one session of Bootcamp, but we had such a great goup in our session, that a few of us decided to repeat it.  In January 2017 I joined the regular classes, at first only 3 days a week, and I quickly changed my membership to unlimited. I do my best to go 4-5 times a week now.

Explain how CrossFit Orangeville has changed your life

CrossFit has changed my life in several ways. Not only am I much stronger, healthier, and much more fit, it has been wonderful for my mental health. I work a desk job, from a home office I tend to work straight through the day without a break, which means no exercise, and no face to face interaction with others. I also have 2 teenage boys, who I take to their activities, as well drop them off to and from school.  CrossFit is my time - a healthy addiction. I never realized how much I would enjoy getting stronger and pushing my limits. I really like that improvements are quantifiable - not just visible. In March my one rep max for a back squat was 115, and by June I had the confidence and strength to improve my one rep max by 45lbs to 160lbs!

What are your short-term and long-term goals

My short term goals are to be able to do Toes to Bar, and consecutive double-unders. My long term goal, is to get my nutrition on track, so my hard work will show! I  am striving to be in the best shape in my life for my 50th birthday next August.

Any advice for individuals who may be nervous or apprehensive about starting CrossFit?

If possible join a Bootcamp session, if not, just do it and try a class. The workouts are achievable for everyone, the coaches are awesome, and know their stuff. They really care to show you the proper way to do the movements safely.  They push you to do what you can do, and motivate you when you think you can't do anymore.  It is motivating to workout with people of all ages and abilities. It challenges you to do  better everyday.   Crossfit is a community, it really is. It is hard to explain, you have to see and do it for yourself.
